Cleaned For Service – Hebrews 9

Big Question:

What do we do with all the “blood talk” in the Bible, and what does it have to do with my guilt, my past, and my purpose in everyday life?

Sermon Summary

Many people today feel uneasy when they hear Christians sing about “power in the blood” or being “washed in the blood.” Hebrews 9 is full of sacrificial language, and verse 22 says, “Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” In a modern world that is distant from farms, sacrifice, and the reality of death, this can sound primitive or even gory.

In this message, Pastor Jonathan explains that in Scripture, blood is not about God demanding gore. Blood represents life, loyalty, and covenant. God is not asking humans to climb up to him through violence. He is coming down to us in sacrificial love. Jesus, the Son of God, offers his own blood as the final act of covenant faithfulness so that our consciences can be cleansed from “dead works.”

That cleansing is not the end of the story. It is the beginning of our purpose. Christ frees us from guilt and religious performance so that we can serve the living God here and now. Hebrews 9 describes our present inheritance, access to God and a cleansed conscience today, and our future inheritance, the coming renewal of all things when Christ returns.

In a world that feels broken, overwhelming, and confusing, this passage invites us to live as sons and daughters of the King. We are cleansed for service, called to participate in God’s restoration of the world while we wait in hope for Jesus to appear again.

Key Takeaways:

  • Blood in the Bible is not about brutality. It is about covenant loyalty, life, and God’s self-giving love.

  • Jesus offers his own blood as an act of covenant faithfulness, bearing the cost of our failure so that we do not have to.

  • Christ cleanses our conscience from “dead works,” the things we do to try to fix ourselves or earn God’s favor, so that we can approach God with confidence.

  • Forgiveness is not the finish line of the Christian life. It is the starting line. We are cleansed to serve the living God with our whole lives.

  • In Christ, we already have a present inheritance, access to God, a cleansed conscience, and a calling today, and we look forward to a future inheritance, the renewal of all things when Jesus returns.
