A Very Brief History of LGBT+ Marginalization in the Church | GOF97

LGBT+ people have historically been mistreated in churches. While not Christian is willing to accept responsibility, the fact that many mainline protestant churches have issued “apologies” witnesses to this reality. So why is it important for Evangelicals to recognize this history and what can they learn? To answer this question, I explore the social forces that shaped the Gay Pride movement and its implications in ministering to LGBT+ people.

A Very Brief History of LGBT+ Marginalization in the Church | GOF97

by Dr. Jonathan G. Smith | Season 3

This Episode’s Topic: Recovering the Bible’s View of Justice

To better understand why this topic matters, missionaries must understand the dynamics and cultural forces that shape a people group. Ministers must understand the stories that shape what people groups believe.

LGBT+ people have charged Evangelicals with “hateful speech.” So much so, evangelicals are labeled as “hating gay people.” This sad state of affairs is mostly due to well-meaning but misguided parents who forced their children out of their home. Not all were evangelical parents, but the rhetoric from the cultural wars sadly has strengthened this perception.

This reality creates a barrier to the Gospel that can be impenetrable to the LGBT+ person.
