This Week’s Topic: Overcoming Perfectionism

Sometimes perfectionism can work for us, but when it comes to our spiritual lives, perfectionism always works against us.

Perfectionism is particularly destructive when we confuse God’s perspective of us with our view.  God simply doesn’t look at us the way we think He does.

If we believe that we must somehow continue to live perfect lives to gain God’s favor, then we have failed to understand what the Bible teaches.

Perfectionism can also cause us to look outside ourselves for sources of our unhappiness, rather than realizing the problem is internal. In our spiritual lives, this can happen when we no longer feel the joy or excitement of our early faith experiences.  We can become bogged down in the Christian life because we have failed to realize that belief in Jesus is no guarantee of a perfect life.

What is the solution to this perplexing problem? To begin, we need to understand how our status changes with God when we confess Jesus Christ as savior and king.
