Parkland School Shooting – How To Navigate Planet Death | GOF79

The Parkland School Shooting is another vivid reminder of the sickness that pervades our society. When children murder other children, we need as a nation to slow down and ask “what’s happening”? What’s going on? What are the conditions in our families, cities, and society that are leading to this kind of outcome? We then need to listen.

Questions and statements like these ultimately lead to different solutions. For the Christian, however, we need to withdraw from the debates just long enough to remember one thing. We live on planet death. So how do we navigate this planet? On today’s show, I offer my candid response to the Parkland School shooting, challenging Grace Nation to think deeply about the issues at stake.

GOF79 | Parkland School Shooting - How to Navigate Planet Death

by Dr. Jonathan G. Smith | Season 2

This Episode’s Topic:

To better understand why this issue matters, school shootings are terrible. But they are mere symptoms of a more profound disease infecting our society and the world. Planet Death is a reality we must recognize. Paul called this “reality” the law of sin and death. Left unchecked, it wrecks havoc on people, cultures, and nations. The answer is nothing more and nothing less than the Gospel of Jesus Christ. But we need to know how to apply it in these stressful situations.

Theology On The Street – Is God Angry At Me?

This Lenten season, I’ve been reflecting on this question. No, God is not angry. So what scriptural proofs do I have? The answer is found in I John 2:1–2 where Jesus is described as the propitiation for our sins.

Feature Presentation: Responding to the Parkland School Shooting

There are five ways that I believe Grace Nation should respond to the Parkland School Shooting.

  1. Mourn the loss. This school shooting is a reminder of Planet Death. Take time to mourn and not just react.
  2. Pray — “Lord have mercy.” “Christ have mercy.” “Lord have mercy.”
  3. Resist the urge to defend, debate, or react. Instead, offer grace to those who are hurting and listen to people’s concerns.
  4. Pray for the families, victims, and survivors who must deal with this trauma.
  5. Examine ourselves — how are we contributing to Planet Death?
